In 2015, we started a crochet business called, Hooked On Patterns. Today our website attracts over 125,000 monthly web sessions.
We spent years learning about the crochet business, and much of that time involved experimenting to see what worked.
The Challenges Of A Crochet Business
A crochet blog can be difficult to monetise because, in our experience, large sections of the crochet community don’t want to pay for crochet patterns, preferring to source free patterns online. And even when they find free patterns, some want to print them off, and work offline.
These two issues are a double whammy for crochet designers, because it challenges your ability to sell the crochet pattern in the first place, and also your ability to earn from ad revenue.
And, if all of that isn’t enough to contend with, you also need to know how to protect your content.
It’s so important that you learn about copyright for yourself, because it is sometimes in the interest of larger crochet designers, and crochet companies, to lead you to believe that you can’t protect your work. But you can.
Building A Successful Crochet Business
There are many ways to build a crochet business that’s capable of paying the bills. Sheer luck might even get you there.
But we followed a long road, learning each lesson in turn. It took about 3 years to turn a hobby biz, into a successful crochet business.
We went from selling PDF crochet patterns online, and driving traffic from Facebook to our Ravelry and Etsy shops, to: Driving traffic from multiple online sources, directly to our website, and monetising our content via ads and pattern sales.
There is an important thing to add, we’re not snake-oil salesmen. We’re not selling you a dream, we’re selling you the method -you have to make the dream happen through your hard work.
But, if you don’t have the time to learn about WordPress, we can show you. If you don’t have the time to learn about creating crochet patterns, we can explain. If you don’t know where to start with Pinterest, we can give you a strategy.
That’s all anyone can really do for you, explain how to create the vehicle -only you can drive it.
